Description:

Library boards, whether appointed or elected, advisory or governing, have oversight over the director, as well as approve of budget, the strategic plan, and the policies. Micromanagement is a mistake, as well as what we call the "captive board", which does nothing. So what are the roles of the board members, directors, staff, volunteers, and the greater community?

The Key Idea:  Boards manage the director, and the director manages the library.

Outcomes:

• Establish clear roles for board, director, staff, volunteers, library users, and community members.
• Identify and address areas where board members require education, such as finance, planning, and legal issues.
• Avoid micromanaging director and staff decisions.
• Focus on future of the library and the community and institution it serves.
• Establish board procedures for approving budgets, policies, and director performance.

Presenter:

Pat Wagner has been a trainer, educator, and consultant for 40 years, having worked with clients in 48 states and Canada. She is a manager and producer at Pattern Research, Inc. Pat likes to find the essence in models of human behavior and organizational design and build effective and engaging formats for learning: face-to-face, in print, and online. She has been a poet, playwright, printer, publisher, and graphic designer, and loves books, gardens, and the arts.
