Herding Kittens: How to Have  Influence When You Don't Have     Power or Authority

___________________________________________________________________________________

Supervisors often are assigned to oversee individuals or teams but without the authority to impose meaningful consequences. Or a “self-directed work team” has no boss; they are just supposed to get along and make decisions on their own, regardless of the impact on the organization at large. What if it is your job to “herd kittens”: Ensure people get the job done within shared parameters.

Agenda

  • Introduction: Is Responsibility Without Authority Possible?
  • The Key Idea: Coax The Majority On The Same Page
  • Ask For Legitimate Authority; It Might Be Yours
  • Who Is Accountable? Who Is Responsible?
  • Building Individual Rapport And Group Cohesiveness
  • Working With Smart, Creative People: Special Challenges
  • What You Can’t Do

Outcomes

  • Evaluate the extent of your authority and responsibility.
  • Connect employees’ actions to the strategic plan’s goals.
  • Improve contributions of the team to the workplace’s success.
