Spring 2017 Workshop

Presented by: Judith McCoyd Ph.D.

Loss can come in many forms during our lives.  Losing a loved one to death comes first to mind but other life cycle events such as leaving home, facing the empty nest,  losing a job or  retiring  can all evoke the experience of grief.  When we suffer a loss, our mind knows the fact of the loss.  But our heart doesn’t yet know the reality of it.  We experience the pain of grief when our heart is met with the reality of the loss that our mind already knows.  When our heart and mind collide we are overcome with the pain of loss.  These days we don’t speak of “getting over” grief.  We don’t “get over” losing someone or something we love.  The challenge is, over time, and with effort, to learn to live with it.  Join us for a day of exploring the impact of grief and loss on our clients and how we can be of help to clients across their life journeys.

Learning Objectives

1-Participants will be able to define the evolution of grief theory and explain how post modern concepts inform grief intervention
2- Participants will be able to explain how the destabilization of loss promotes growth differentially over the course of the lifespan.
3- Participants will be able to describe at least one approach to intervention in the face of a loss.
4- Participants will be able to identify losses other than death that impact individuals at varied life course phases
