Target Audience
Course intended for physician, nurses and public health staff who are actively engaged in the identification, case management, and treatment of pediatric and adolescent patients with tuberculosis infection or disease.
Prerequisites
This is not an introductory course. It is recommended that nursing participants attend a Nurse Case Management course prior to attending Pediatric Intensive.
Format
The format for this live event conference will include lecture presentation and case scenario analysis with audience discussion and participation. There will be ample time for questions and answers.
Program Description
Using highly interactive lectures and case studies, participants will be able to identify the facets involved in identifying and treating pediatric and adolescent patients with either latent tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis disease. In addition, participants will review the current epidemiology, pathogenesis, identification, and treatment of tuberculosis affecting children and adolescent children.
Conference Objectives
1. Describe the epidemiology of pediatric TB.
2. Discuss the difference between TB exposure, infection and disease in children.
3. Identify the risk of progression from infection to TB disease in different age groups.
4. Describe how the diagnosis of TB infection in children is made.
5. Identify the diagnostic challenges of identifying TB in children.
6. Discuss the radiographic manifestations of TB in children.
7. Describe alternative imaging modalities fro pediatric TB.
8. Describe the treatment of TB in children.
9. Discuss monitoring children on treatment for TB disease or latent infection.
10. Treatment of drug resistant TB in children.
11. Describe the presentation, clinical manifestations and diagnosis of extrapulmonary TB in children.
12. Discuss monitoring children on treatment for TB disease or latent infection.
13. Discuss the duration of treatment of extrapulmonary TB in children.
14. Describe the differences between various groups that create distinctive challenges for clinicians managing TB in adolescents.
15. Summarize evidence for best practices in diagnosing and treating latent and active TB in adolescents.
16. Identify potential strategies to apply these practices in their own settings.
17. Discuss pediatric TB cases that illustrate common difficulties with diagnosis and case management.
