VPMA PODPAC Donations 2013

Dear Membership,

The VPMA leadership has been discussing the anticipated political expenditures for the upcoming 4 years and how we are going to meet these needs.

Why is it necessary for the VPMA to contribute politically to candidates statewide?

The answer is simple. By contributing to a candidate's run for office, the VPMA is banking political capital so that when issues affecting membership arise, we have support when we need it. This is how the system works.

There are many PACs and many fundraisers asking for contributions from you. There are statewide issues, there are national issues and then there are the issues that overlap between the state and national issues.  To complicate these boundaries, there are agencies such as the Federal Election Commission and the State Election Commission who are responsible for applying and enforcing the applicable laws for each jurisdiction.

Last year was an election year. In addition to the monthly management fee paid to our lobbying firm, the total the VPMA spent in political contributions for 2011 was $34,000.  This is a lot of money, but it raised the awareness of podiatrists among the legislators in Richmond and it allowed success in both legislative issues facing the VPMA in 2011.

We have power, collectively, to accomplish our legislative goals.  If we set a goal of contributing $21,000 annually over the next 4 years to our VPMA PAC, we will meet our goal of $84,000 over the next 4 years.

What does this really mean per individual?

We have 270 members. If every member donated $40, we could raise $10,800, half of our annual goal of $21,000.  We understand that not every member may be able to afford to donate but most of us can afford to donate something.  If you truly cannot afford anything, this is why you belong to the VPMA. We look out for each other; we've got your back.

I would like to challenge every VPMA member to pledge $125 to our VPMA PODPAC annually, for the next 4 years.  Help us meet "Challenge 125."   For those who can donate more, you will make up for those who cannot donate as much.

In the end, we will all benefit and, together, we will accomplish our legislative goals maintaining our legislative influence.
