AUTISM TRAINING FOR PEACE OFFICERS

THIS COURSE MEETS THE NEW MN POST BOARD AUTISM TRAINING REQUIREMENT DUE BY JULY 1, 2022

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience stigma, bias, and disproportionately negative outcomes within their communities because of their disability and intersecting identities.  These experiences increase vulnerability and the likelihood of victimization.  Because it is a highly varied, often invisible disability, the presence of ASD may not be apparent to emergency responders.  Having a limited understanding of ASD and how it may impact a person can lead to misinterpretations of their behavior.  The purpose of this training is to promote safer interactions between peace officers and autistic people by:

  • Demonstrating understanding of ASD
  • Demonstrating understanding of the benefits of autism-informed policing
  • Demonstrating understanding of how to use strategies and practices that promote safe, effective, and positive outcomes in situations involving ASD
  • Identifying tools and technologies that may be useful in interacting with people with ASD
