Cupping therapy, commonly referred to as “cupping”, has been used therapeutically for thousands of years.  The roots of cupping can be traced back to early Egypt, Greece, and throughout European and Asian civilization.   Cupping has shown to increase ROM and local circulation, decrease pain, and create ease in the body. During this 6 hour course, attendees will learn:

  • The history of cupping
  • How to approach a client about receiving cupping
  • Cupping aftercare for the client
  • The indications and contraindications of cupping
  • How to care for your cups
  • The difference between using the cups as a stationary tool, and sliding the cups to work the fascia and soft tissues of the body
  • How to integrate this bodywork modality into a massage session, while staying within our scope of practice.

We will examine and show applications of various styles of cups including glass, acrylic, and silicone cups.  Attendees will be able to observe various applications of cupping as well as practice with partners to learn the differences between lighter and deeper cupping applications.  Fire cupping will be discussed, but not performed during this class.

*Massage tables, linens, lubricant for the skin, and cups are required for this course.  (Do not bring glass fire cups)

About the Presenter

Scott has been a licensed massage therapist and active volunteer for the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) since 1998.  His massage practice is an eclectic blend of eastern, western, and orthopedic methods of bodywork. Scott’s teaching style is dynamic, and he brings attendees a sample of his over 20 years of his massage therapy experiences and influences, from entry level to current day.

In 2008, he cofounded and taught for The World Skin Project with Annie Powell.  As a 501c(3) non-profit organization, the mission of The World Skin Project is to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer through the promotion of early detection, prevention and awareness.  He has also taught at all 3 Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy campuses, the American Institute, and for various New England AMTA Chapters.  To deepen his practice, he became a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine in 2017 with a focus on corrective exercise.  Shortly after Scott founded StrongHouse Continuing Education in 2017, he was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, and his focus shifted from a full time massage practice to continuing education.   StrongHouse continuing education is founded on the belief that a strong educational foundation develops a deep and vibrant massage practice.
