Description:

This interactive training is intended to equip child-serving professionals with the tools and skills needed to identify and respond to juvenile victims of trafficking in their own communities. Through activities, case studies, and the knowledge of subject matter experts, attendees will learn how to recognize signs of trafficking, understand dynamics of exploitative relationships, build empathy with youth who may be experiencing a trafficking situation, and identify available resources to support youth who have been trafficked.

Objectives:

  1. Understand Human Trafficking: Overview of Federal and State Laws, State and Local Data,                  Dynamics of Exploitation
  2. Identify Human Trafficking: Risk Factors, Red Flags and Indicators, Screening Tools
  3. Respond to Human Trafficking:Trauma-Informed Care, Response and Intervention,                              Using Ohio’s Safe Harbor Law, Resources

Presenters:

Vanessa Perkins is the Workforce Development Director at Freedom A La Carte and has previous experience working as a criminal justice professional for a local county court and the county prosecutor’s office. Ms. Perkins is an anti-trafficking subject matter expert who uses her knowledge, experience, and professional expertise to educate professionals and general audiences across the state. She also serves as a grant project constituent for the Ohio Department of Public Safety Office of Criminal Justice Services.

Emily Dunlap provides direct legal services and advocacy to trafficked and exploited persons. She represents clients in a variety of legal matters including immigration, criminal defense, domestic relations, and civil proceedings. She also provides technical consultation on anti-trafficking best-practices, policy, court programming, and legislation. Emily received her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2014. She graduated from Ohio University in 2010, receiving her undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Women & Gender Studies. Prior to joining Advocating Opportunity, Emily was The OSU Mortiz College of Law’s Greif Fellow in Juvenile Human Trafficking, representing exploited and trafficked children in a wide variety of legal proceedings.

Chelsea Gaffey, LSW is the Trafficking Liaison for the Department of Youth Services. She is a Licensed Social Worker, with 10 years of professional experience in the Anti-Human Trafficking field. Her work includes both domestic and international experience, as well as direct service, providing technical assistance, trainings, and advocacy work.

This program is offered for 6.5 clock hours of continuing education for counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists. Training Center is approved by the Ohio Psychological Association MCE program to offer continuing education for Ohio psychologists. This program is offered for 6.5 clock hours of continuing education for psychologists. Child Focus, Inc., 00PD-3109-52668, maintains responsibility for the program.
