Did you know suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for our children, family, friends, neighbors, students and coworkers ages 10-24?

Were you aware that suicide rates have increased 128% for our children ages 10-14 since the 1980's?

Did you know that there has been a 28% increase in suicide rates amongst adults ages 35-64?

Loss of a loved one, friend, neighbor, colleague, or other acquaintance to suicide is devastating.  Importantly, there is hope and help for persons contemplating suicide, and you can help others in need.  QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. 

According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a Gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

The QPR Gatekeeper Training Program is NREPP approved evidenced based training. 

As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper, trainees receive background on the prevalence of suicide and learn to

• recognize the warning signs of suicide
• know how to offer hope
• know how to get help and save a life

Presenter: Melanie Palmer is an Independently Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with Supervisory Status and American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Approved Supervisor. She is the Director of Training for Child Focus, Inc, has worked in the outpatient and school-based programs at CFI, and taught a general psychology course at Southwestern College. She has over 20 years experience working with clients on a variety of issues and challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual abuse, marital conflict, and has extensive experience working with children and adolescents suffering from emotional and behavioral problems. Melanie is a certified instructor for Keeping Children Safe: Child Abuse and Neglect Curriculum for Early Childhood Professionals, Stewards of Children Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program and Youth Mental Health First Aid. She is also a certified instructor for QPR, a Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Program, QPRT Suicide Risk Assessment and Management program, QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Instructor's Master Trainer and Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk: Core Competencies for Behavioral Health Professionals (AMSR) Trainer as well as a Crisis Intervention Team trainer. Melanie develops and facilitates trainings on a variety of topics including trauma-informed care, separation and divorce issues, parenting, stress management and self-care, communication, and more.

Training Center is approved by the Ohio Psychological Association MCE program to offer continuing education for Ohio psychologists. This program is offered for 2.0 clock hours of continuing education for psychologists. Child Focus, Inc., 00PD-3109-52668, maintains responsibility for the program.                                                                                                                        Professional Development Hours for Teachers: A statement of contact hour verification will be provided, which educators in turn provide to their Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC). Ohio Revised Code (Section 3319.22) assigns LPDCs the responsibility of reviewing educators’ Professional Development activities as part of their Individual Professional Development Plans (IPDP) and determining if they meet licensure renewal requirements.                                                                           CE educational activities that meet the continuing education requirement for the Ohio Board of Nursing: A certificate of attendance verification will be provided with the CE activity hours.
