Substance abuse disorders are among the greatest concerns for at-risk youth, yet clinicians continue to struggle to find effective treatment strategies to address this problem. This session will briefly offer current trends in substance use and related disorders, contextualizing them in light of risk and protective factors. Participants will gain an understanding of the role that substance abuse and treatment stigma plays in deterring youth from seeking services, the quality of care received, and available supports. Practical screening, assessment, and treatment considerations and skills will be learned, distinguishing approaches when working with children, adolescents, and transitional aged youth.

Objectives:

1.       Describe the major risk and protective factors for substance abuse among youth

2.       Identify biases towards substance users and explain them using stigma theory

3.      Identify valid and reliable instruments to screen for alcohol and drug use among at-risk youth

4.       Improve your skills for treating substance use disorders among children, adolescents, and transitional-aged youth in family contexts

Presenter:  Dr. Michael Brubaker, NCC, LICDC-CS, is the Program Coordinator for the Counseling Program at the University of Cincinnati and a licensed chemical dependency counselor. With 19 years of clinical and research experience with addicted populations, he has served a broad range of clients including youth, adults, and families in community settings. He served as a clinical case manager for Ridgeview Institute and the Program Director of the Carpenter’s House, a 142-bed residential recovery program in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Brubaker obtained his Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and his Ph.D. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Florida. He also serves on the Education Committee of the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professional Board and is a founding member of the Lower Price Hill Caring Connections, a local substance abuse prevention coalition. His research has focused on treatment stigma among addicted youth, group work in the schools, and substance abuse treatment strategies for LGBTQ youth and adults.
