When working with children ages 0-5 it is difficult to avoid encountering challenging behaviors.  This course will explore a common definition of challenging behavior by contrasting developmentally appropriate behavior.  We will also identify various types of deficits leading to challenging behaviors as well as become familiar with different models to address those deficits and reduce challenging behaviors.  Finally we will learn interventions for responding to challenging behavior and develop tools for supporting and communicating with families through an intervention process.

Objectives:

1.       Develop a common definition of challenging behavior and understanding contributing factors.

2.       Understand the important elements of prevention and setting children up for success.

3.       Identify various types of deficits leading to challenging behavior as well as become familiar with different models to address deficits and reduce challenges.

4.       Learn interventions for responding to challenging behavior and develop tools for supporting and communicating with families through the intervention process.

Module 3: RESPONDING APPROPRIATELY TO CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR

Module 4: REVIEW OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT VS. SKILL PERFORMANCE
