Struggling Readers and the Common Core State Standards: What's a teacher to do?

Barbara Wilson and Nancy Hennessy, nationally recognized educators and authors, will be the featured speakers at this conference sponsored by the New Hampshire Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (NHIDA) on September 26, 2014 at SERESC in Bedford, NH.

More Information

Wilson and Hennessy will address important issues relating to reading instruction within the Common Core State Standards and the particular needs of struggling readers with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Barbara Wilson presenting  - "Common Core Standards and Multi-tiered Instruction: How do these impact individuals with dyslexia?"

Description: Dyslexia creates a breakdown in attaining efficient reading and writing skills, requiring specific treatment. How does this fit into multi-tiered models of instruction and the Common Core State Standards? This session will provide an overview of the English Language Arts standards in relation to struggling readers and expand upon the foundational skills of the Common Core. It will explore both the positive aspects of CCSS and important considerations necessary to ensure that students with dyslexia can be successful in this future school environment.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Participants will identify six major shifts in the Common Core English Language Arts Standards.
  • Participants will identify key instructional support for learning and instruction for individuals with disabilities in relation to the Common Core Standards.
  • Participants will review the details of foundational skills of reading, including print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, and fluency.

Nancy Hennessy presenting  - "Connecting Comprehension Processes and the CCSS: Creating an Instructional Framework for Proficient Reading"

Description: Proficient reading is complex and requires both foundational and higher order skills. Dyslexic students typically demonstrate difficulties with word recognition but many also struggle with comprehension, which is complex and dependent on a “family” of language and cognitive skills and processes. Designing and delivering effective instruction for these students requires each of us to understand the connections between the development of these skills and processes and our students’ ability to demonstrate the competencies required by the standards. This session will explore a framework for comprehension instruction that is reflective of levels of language processing necessary to meet increasing academic demands of the standards.

 Learner Outcomes:

  • Participants will review the complexity of skilled reading and reading comprehension.
  • Participants will examine the language and cognitive processes critical to reading comprehension and connections to the standards.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of an instructional framework that organizes and scaffolds educators' delivery of text and reflects the research on the processes critical to constructing meaning..

Participants will earn six hours of professional development credit.

We hope that you will join us for what promises to be an exceptional presentation by these highly respected authorities.

Sincerely,

Michael S. Patten, M.S. Ed
