Culinary Training for Teachers
on Saturday, August 24th in Santa Maria

Registration is open for the Orfalea Foundation’s Preschool Food & Healthy Habits Initiative Early Childhood Culinary Training for Teachers!  This training is graciously provided, free of charge, for early childhood centers in Santa Barbara County, by The Orfalea Foundation.  The training will focus on how center-based teaching staff can positively impact healthy food practices at their centers and ultimately, children’s well-being throughout their lives.

If your center is located outside of Santa Barbara County and you wish to attend, please contact Linda in our office.  Please note, there will be a $25 fee to participants from centers outside of Santa Barbara Country.  You will need to register and your name will be placed on a wait-list until we can determine if space is available.  You will be contacted on Monday, August 19th of your status. 

Lead Chef Instructor Janet Stevenson and The Orfalea Foundation's School Food Initiative team will provide this focused full-day training.  The training is designed specifically for teachers, teacher aides and food preparation staff at your center. It will be held on Saturday, August 24th at The Minami Community Center (Assembly Room) in Santa Maria.

• Balanced Nutrition/Wellness for Engaged Learners
• Knife Skills & Safety
• Flavor Profiles
• New Fun & Healthy Snack Recipes
• Food Systems
• Carbon Footprints
• Hands-on Snack Preparation Activity

In addition, our Preschool Food and Healthy Habits team, Eric Nelson, Theresa
Embry and Carol Capito will share new ideas and best practices from the field. 

Participants are requested to bring a favorite "Healthy Recipe for Kids" or "Healthy Best Practices" on a 3" x 5" or 4" x 6" card.  They will be compiled and sent out by email after the training.

The Orfalea School Food Initiative Culinary team will provide morning "Brain Break" refreshments from 8:00 to 9:00 am and lunch at 12:30 pm.

Each participant will receive Culinary Training materials, a PFI tote bag, a food conversion chart magnet, handouts & new recipe ideas and a Professional Development Certificate.  There will be a special end of day Gift Drawing with many gifts including a grand prize of a $250 Dick Blick Art Materials gift certificate.  

REGISTRATION:  Please register by Monday, August 19th.   It is suggested that you register early for this training as space is limited.  Should registration become full, you will be placed on a wait-list and notified if space becomes available.  

In order to receive regular updates regarding the training, it is important to follow these steps when registering:
1.  Please use an email address OTHER THAN your center's main email address.
2.  Add outdoor-classroom@caltech.edu to your accepted sites to receive emails and also make sure that incoming emails are not blocked.
