Keynote Topic
The Nonprofit’s Role in Our Economy

Summary
Nonprofits are often considered a nominal sector, isolated in their own corner of the economy -bettering the world while zeroing out their books. In reality, nonprofits are integral to the overall functioning of the economy by bolstering the economy in a number of ways. As a consumer of goods, a steady provider of employment, and a force of economic stabilization for low-income families, the nonprofit sector has a critical role in the health of our overall economy. As nonprofits pivot from a “service” sector to one that focuses on solving the root causes of society’s greatest challenges, the nonprofit sector’s influence on a positive economy and community development cannot by underestimated. Using Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin - the largest hunger relief organization in Wisconsin - as an example, we’ll explore the significant and evolving impact of the nonprofit sector.

Learning Objectives
1.     Impact of the nonprofit sector on the overall economy and community health
2.     Evolution of the nonprofit sector in solving “root causes
3.     Understanding of the functioning of a “systems-level” nonprofit (Feeding                   America Eastern Wisconsin)
