Impact of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials in Water on Your Carbon Filters

You have been invited to a very informative seminar regarding naturally occurring radiological impact on activated carbon.   Speakers will be Richard Croll Radiation Health Physicist and Jennifer Noll  from the PA DEP, and Mrs. Stephanie Carr from Calgon Carbon.

Why should you attend?  If your company uses activated carbon for the remediation of private well ground water for VOC contamination, sulfur removal, radon reduction, this seminar has critical  information that may impact the way you conduct your carbon exchange program.

Richard Croll will discuss:

  • Rock types in SEPA using PA DCNR Maps 13 and 63 as a guide
  • Natural radioactivity decay chains and equilibrium activity of daughter isotopes.
  • The radiological impact of picking up Radium vs Radon on activated carbon treatment systems.
  • Calculated dose rates from a typical 55 gallon activated carbon bed over time with Ra-226 in the water and what it means.
  • Since the TENORM guidelines are changing, only general discussion about disposal options will be given.

Mrs. Stephanie Carr is the Principal Applications Engineer for Calgon Carbon.  She will be here as technical back up to help answer your questions as it relates to this topic and or any other activated carbon questions you may have.
