Cleveland Summer Lecture Series:

Diane Davis-Sikora

  • PROUDLY PRESENTED BY:

Diane Davis-Sikora is an Associate Professor in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University.  She is a licensed architect whose research focuses on temporary membrane structures, and methods of narrative and documentary storytelling in architecture.  Her short documentary on pneumatic architecture, 'Sturctures of Air', was an official selection at the 2012 VI Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Films Festival and the 2013 Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR).  Her lecture, the final installment of AIA Cleveland's Summer Lecture Series, will evoke analysis and discussion of her investigations and applications of 'soft structures' and pneumatic architecture.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will evaluate the broad implications of soft structures on architecture, design, as well as other fields, such as textile crafts, farming and aerospace.
  • Attendees will explore exciting research and applications for pneumatic (air) architecture and discuss supporting applicable systems.
  • Attendees will discuss and visualize associated materials and methods at various scales, such as interior surfaces and fabric-formed environments as well as large urban installations.
  • Attendees will consider how these new advances have positive implications for the environment, including recyclability and energy efficiency.
