AIA Cleveland Summer Lecture Series:

Ronald Reed, FAIA | On the Value of Silence

Summer Lecture Series Mission:

To expose, promote, and celebrate Cleveland design excellence, of all project types and sizes through an inspiring and provoking lecture series from high-caliber architects. Practitioners of small, medium, and large firms share their portfolios with fellow architects, and the public alike to serve as a window into their practice, design aesthetic, and design process.

Ronald Reed, FAIA

Principal, DLR Group | WRL

The thing that underpins my work is a belief that architecture can provide a respite from the barrage of stimulus that has become an integral part of our existences. If this is perceived as a form of “noise”, then our built environments may have the potential to counterbalance the static electricity and keep us centered.

Learning Objectives:

1) Attendees will understand the design challenges associated with sculpting places conducive to solace and focus in the expotentially accerating information age. Attendees will explore the buidling design and interiors of such places.

2) Attendees will examine the interior finishes and construction systems of healthcare, hospitality, and workplace projects and learn about how these design choices impact occupants' sensory experience and influence productivity and wellness.

3) Attendees will learn about the building systems, including MEP systems, that are conducive to creating such environments. Attendees will observe strategies that reduce "noise" of all types (olefactory, visual, etc.) that will encourage productive and healing spaces.

4) Attendees will consider environmental factors on spatial environments, such as daylight harvesting, and their impact on occupants' productivity and wellness. Attendees will learn strategies and parameters for incorporating daylight into many project types.
