Course Description:

The opioid epidemic has taken many lives over the years because of over prescribing of opioid pain medications. As this issue continues to rage in America, it is crucial that dental professionals know how to identify ways to decrease the opioids prescribed through their practices in order to reduce the potential for misuse and abuse. This program will review what the dental provider needs to know and how to decrease their impact in the community. We will review proper writing of prescriptions, disposal of unused medications, and protection of prescription pads. This program meets the requirements for the ADA Pharmacology credits for licensure renewal.

Learning Objectives:

1. Review the history and the problem of prescription drug abuse in America.
2. Discuss key factors which would identify a patient to be at risk for abuse.
3. Review proper use and disposal of prescription medications.
4. Discuss alternatives for pain management in post-operative situations which do not require narcotics.
5. Describe best practices with writing of prescriptions and protection of prescription pads within the office environment.
6. Identify 2-3 drugs commonly used illicitly.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Marvin Leventer received his dental degree from the University of Maryland in 1990. He then completed a two-year General Practice Residency, and a two-year Dental Anesthesiology Residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in New York. Dr. Leventer is a Diplomat of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and a fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He is also a member of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and the Academy of General Dentisty. Dr. Leventer is committed to providing health oriented dental care without pain or anxiety. 

Dr. Leventer has been a part-time clinical instructor in Dental Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland Dental School since 1997, as well as maintaining a full-time private general dental practice. Since 2009, he has been a full-time Assistant Professor in Dental Anesthesia at the University of Maryland, and provides general dentistry within the dental school's faculty practice. He has lectured for many dental groups on the use of anesthesia in dentristy.

All attendees are required to register their name and email address on the Webex platform and receive an Attention Rating of 90% or higher in order to receive credits. The Attention Rating is calculated automatically through the Webex system and reported to our team at the conclusion of the program. In order to receive the highest rate possible, stay logged into the training for the duration, do not minimize the training screen, and do not open other screens on top of the training. 

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion.  You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the program in order to complete the evaluation.  Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.
