Innovations in the Assessment and
Treatment of Suicidal Risk

Course Description:

This presentation will present context and history related to mental health care of suicidal risk. Then there will be a review of reliably identifying and assessing different suicidal states. The presentation will consider various policy considerations and the use of stabilization interventions. Proven suicide-focused treatments proven to work by randomized controlled trials will be discussed. The training ends with a consideration of ethics and malpractice along with a stepped care model for suicidal risk that is evidence-based, least-restrictive, and cost-effective. 

Leaning Objectives:

1. Identify how to reliably and effectively assess three different suicidal states.
2. Recognize and apply qualitative and quantitative suicidal status form (SSF) assessment to identify treatment relevant information.
3. Explain how to effectively intervene and treat 2-3 different suicidal states.
4. Recall three components of CAMS philosophy used to target and treat patient-defined suicidal "drivers". 
5. Integrate CAMS clinical outcomes into resolution and disposition during final patient session.
6. Integrate applied ethics, risk management, malpractice liability and the importance of a stepped care approach to effecitve suicide-focused care. 

Speaker Information:

David A. Jobes, Ph.D., ABPP, is a Professor of Psychology, Director of the Suicide Prevention Laboratory, and Associate Director of Clinical Training at The Catholic University of America.  He is also an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, at Uniformed Services University.  He has published six books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles.  Dr. Jobes is a past President of the American Association of Suicidology (AAS) and he is the recipient of various awards for his scientific work including the 1995 AAS "Shneidman Award" (early career contribution to suicidology), the 2012 AAS "Dublin Award" (for career contributions in suicidology), and the 2016 AAS "Linehan Award" (for suicide treatment research).  He has been a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Defense, and Veterans Affairs.  Dr. Jobes is a member of the Scientific Council and the Public Policy Council of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).  He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and is Board certified in clinical psychology (American Board of Professional Psychology).  Dr. Jobes maintains a private clinical, consulting, and forensic practice in Washington, DC.

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to receive an Attendance Rating of 90% or higher in order to receive credits. The Attendance Rating is calculated automatically through the Webex system and reported to our team at the conclusion of the program. In order to receive the highest rate possible, participants must stay logged into the training for the duration, do not minimize the training screen, and do not open other screens on top of the training. 

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion. You will need the access code announced at the conclusion of the program in order to complete the evaluation. Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed.

VA VISN 5 Employee - $40

APA Certificate Fee - $10 additional to registration

Registration will close end of day on May 9th. We will not accept registrations after this date.

The program day will include two 15 minute breaks - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - as well as a 45 minute break for lunch.
