Multicultural Competence in Clinical Supervision
Dr. Jade Wolfman-Charles

The location of this program has changed; the new location is below.

Water's Edge Events Center
4687 Millennium Drive
Belcamp, MD 21017

Course Description:

As clinical supervisors, it is our ethical obligation to provide competent supervision to trainees, which includes attention to cultural competence. Cultural competence is often a shared value amongst clinicians and clinical supervisors, though supervisors and trainees often cite barriers to effectively addressing issues of culture and diversity in supervision, leaving a gap in training. While trainees are now obtaining coursework in diversity and supervision, many clinical supervisors received their own training at a time when this was not yet the norm. Although state licensing boards and educational accrediting bodies require ongoing training in diversity and, to a lesser extent, supervision, variation remains in the quality and frequency of this ongoing training. Similarly, training on the intersection of supervision and cultural competence is even less frequent. This workshop will serve to identify barriers to addressing culture and diversity in supervision and help to identify solutions to these gaps in professional practice.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define key multicultural terms

2. Examine potential inter/intrapersonal biases that impede cultural competence

3. Describe how cultural awareness and cultural biases impact the quality of supervision

4. Describe an overarching model of culturally competent supervision

5. Identify one best practice for culturally competent supervision

6. Develop a personal supervision goal and one method for continued training targeting that goal
