Program Description:

Most of us have very strong reactions toward a client, patient, offender, consumer or employeedemonstrating angry emotion and potentially out-of-control behavior. Sometimes our reactions becomepart of the problem instead of the solution. This presentation can help change these uncomfortablescenarios into potentially positive corrective experiences.Anger and aggression are best viewed from a multiple causation set of glasses. This skills training eventwill look at anger and aggression as a symptom of numerous disorders including addiction, personalitydisorders (antisocial and borderline, for example), as a learned coping survival strategy, as amanifestation of the ego, in relationship to self-esteem, etc.The latest scientific understanding of this group of individuals will be addressed while placing emphasis onverbal and behavioral management, along with the demonstration of empirically proven strategies such asrelaxation and cognitive-behavioral techniques.Based on over 40 years of experience, Dr. Nuckols has worked with major corporations and varioussystems including the military, criminal justice, mental health and substance abuse. His backgroundincludes over 35 years of direct clinical practice and his educational background includes advance work inpharmacology, psychology and neurobiology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss that anger may be a strategy used to preserve a client’s need for control when a situationarises that causes fear of loss of control.
  • Assess their personal reaction to anger and potential violence and, most importantly, if this reaction iseffective or ineffective.
  • Discuss the importance of establishing rapport and the setting of limits with this population.
  • Describe verbal and behavioral management strategies helpful in successfully handling an angryoutburst with potential for aggressive acting-out.
  • Examine why punitive attempts to control the client’s anger fail and what you can do to change negativeoutcome.
