Sunday July 16th-Saturday July 22:  "Capturing the Essence of Small Town Maine" $1295-$1595, GIRLS ONLY this year full

Overnight, week-long class in Harrison, Maine

Perfect overnight camp UPGRADE. We will spend the week taking photos and exploring Harrison and Bridgton Maine.  Jenny is so excited to work in this location. She has been traveling here for years to take photos of kids at overnight camps.  The lake area, and small town charm are unbeatable.  Stephen King based his Novel "Under the Dome" on the town & residents of Bridgton, Maine.

Our log cabin is decked out with a game room, jacuzzi, huge screen, ping pong table and more.  There will be an in-house cook and nightly activities.  

 

INCLUDED:

Transportation in the Big Picture van from Boston to Maine and back, all meals, activities, cameras supplied and photo book of student work from the week.  No need to bring bedding and towels.  Everything ready to go.

Trips to lake, ice cream, movies, antique shops, bookstores and other small town gems.  We will have lessons, review and edit our work at the cabin.  Each day will have a photo trip followed by downtime/editing/dinner and evening activities.

 

THE CABIN:

The cabin is located in the woods 3 hours from Boston in a small town with lakes, pizza spot, antique shops and The Long lake Ice Cream shop.  Bridgton is five minutes away and has a movie theatre, shops, cafe, bookstore, lake etc.  At our cabin there is a basement game room with video games, fuzzball, a TV room with ping pong, reading nook, fireplace, picnic tables and jacuzzi.

 

THE STAFF:

Jenny is the lead instructor and in charge of girls at all times.  The in-house cook is Jenny's mother, Jean, who has worked at KidsArts in JP for 7 years.  The RA is Gigi, Jenny's daughter.  Gigi is 15 and goes to BLA.  She will run the activities in the evening such as scavenger hunts and movie nights.

    

SLEEPING:

Price varies depending on your accommodations.  All staff will sleep on the first floor.  Second floor has two bedrooms. One with two queen log beds ($1595), and the second with a log bunk bed ($1495).  Level 3 is THE LOFT.  It is an open space with a couch and bureau overlooking the grand living room.  The loft has a daybed ($1395) and trundle ($1395) and a very comfortable, completely new inflatable twin mattress ($1295).

SUMMER WORKSHOP GENERAL INFORMATION

Our program is a boutique learning experience that is part camp/part art class.  2/3rds of the time is spent "on the go" shooting around Boston. The other 1/3rd takes place editing and relaxing at the home teaching space located near the Franklin Park Zoo (2 miles from the JP meeting spot). We have the Wii, boardgames, basketball hoop and feel free to bring summer reading. Classes are for 11-15 yo, the most common age is 13. 

  • Classes are MONDAY-FRIDAY from 9-3pm.
  • We meet at 9 and end at 3 in JP at the Soldier's Monument (12 South St, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130).
  • We supply students with professional digital SLR cameras (Nikon D70 and D100). Editing lessons in Lightroom.
  • Students bring lunch or lunch money daily.  Snacks provided. Water bottle suggested.
  • Students leave with their photos on a USB during photo weeks and complete a short movie during film weeks.  Purchase a USB flash drive at check out or bring your own on the last day of class.

June 26th-July 7th (no class 7/4): Photo Assignments, $795  FULL. 


TWO WEEK CLASS - GOOD FOR ALL LEVELS (no class July 4th).  Each day students will have a different photo assignment while we explore the Hidden Gems Boston has to offer.  Examples are: portraiture, architecture, journalism, poster/book cover artwrok, travel, black and white imagery, street photography and advertising. More advanced students can take it to another level with editing style and subject matter.  Newbies can get a grasp of what good photography is and their personal style.  Field trip examples: Christian Science Center/The Pru (Eataly), North End, Castle Island, Fort Revere, Harvard Square and Boston Public Market, Pier's Park in Eastie. Click here to check out images from Photo Assignments 2016. 


July 10th-July 14th: Black and White Photography, $425 full


ONE WEEK CLASS - GOOD FOR ALL LEVELS. We will travel to a variety of Boston areas learning the concepts that make a strong B&W image, such as lines, shapes and patterns, contrast in lighting, decisive moment and subject matter.  Students will voye on field trip options to East Boston Marina, Boston Common, Chinatown, Harvard Square, Castle Island  and more. Check out images from Coastal Photo 2016


July 24th-Aug 4: The Narrative Photographer, $825 full

 

TWO WEEK CLASS - Each person has a story to tell and an artist's stamp they put on their work.  Students will explore their mood, expression and editing style in this two week class.  Field trip options:  Concord, Fort Revere, North End, Boston Public Market, Newbury Street, Revere Beach and more.  We will look at art of others both at the space and at museums.  Each student will explore their unique vision while implementing our daily photo challenges in composition, subject matter, lighting.  Our general theme will be "Ying/Yang:Two sides of the same coin, Beauty and Ugliness". August 7th-August 18th:  Two-Week Movie Making Class, $825  2 spots left


TWO WEEK CLASS - We have a guest filmmaker/TA each week this year!  Students learn screenplay structure, story development, directing, acting, camera work and editing.  After we decide on our story, we morph it into proper screenplay format with 3 Acts, Character Arc, Obstacles all that good stuff.  We storyboard, assign actors, film around town and edit at the teaching space.  Students are welcome to bring short scripts or ideas for our project.  Editing is done in iMovie.  We also spend a some time watching movies.  Each student will asked to play a vital role and often switch around from acting, directing, filming and editing.  Do not be shy.  We like comedies and we like to have fun!   Click Here to check out our 2016 film "Ghostsmashers".

Still Photo Week: Unique opportunity for one student only to shoot stills on set, portraits, candids and documentary shots during movie making weeks.  Jenny will provide individualized lessons and critiques each day.  The studuent with have full use of the laptop to edit their images in Lightroom where they will be taught how to manipulate their photos. Emphasis on Documentary, Portraiture, and Locations, including depth of field, shutter speed, composition, decisive moment and use of the long lens.  Sign up for both weeks and take $25 off with the discount code "TWOWEEKS" at check out.  We will use these stills in our movie and in the closing credits and bloopers.  Also, if interested, student can act in or shoot movie footage for our film.

 August 21-25th: Simmer Down Photo Class, $425, Full

Our vibe is reflection and winding down our summer.  The pace will be slower and field trips will be to peaceful spots like waterways, beaches, parks and quiet cobblestone streets.  Each day will have a core lesson such as 2/3 rule, perspective, lighting, framing and foreground/middleground/background.

Jennifer Connelly started Big Picture to fill the gap in after school programming for middle school aged children in 2011.  She has four kids in BPS and has worked as a professional photographer for 20 years.
