The Duh! Approach To Management and Supervision: Dispelling Common Leadership Myths

People are promoted because they’re good at their jobs. Being in a leadership position is a very different job, for which most are not trained. This presentation dispels myths associated with effective leadership and provides common sense approaches. Participants will be encouraged to assess and re-think commonly held beliefs and will leave with immediately applicable skills that they can incorporate into their management and supervisory styles. Attendees will learn what works and what doesn’t and will be offered ways to enhance communication and increase motivation. They will be encouraged to accept what makes sense, throw out what doesn’t, and put on the shelf what they want to take down some day. It promises to be a transforming experience.

Presenter: Gerri King

 Session 2

10:45 a.m. – Noon

Creating a Blame-Free and Gossip-Free Environment

Efforts to create a blame-free and gossip-free environment are easy to understand but hard to do. Once accomplished, however, the workplace is a safer and more trusting environment, and productivity and motivation increase. It doesn’t matter who is to blame. What matters is that what’s not working gets fixed.

When the environment is not punitive, people are much more willing to own up to mistakes and take responsibility when something goes wrong. Gossip-free means that people talk to each other rather than about each other. At the outset, both of these concepts seem impossible to implement. “It’s not natural,” you might say. But, it is worth a try! Consider the benefits of a work environment where fear, worry, resentment, and suspicion are absent.

A place where the work flows because the avenues previously cluttered with destructive chatter have been cleared, and the people doing the work become a team. In this session, you’ll look at ways to break through work cultures where blame and gossip are part of the norm. You’ll look at how to deal in a positive way with mistakes that are made; and you’ll look at how you can help create a work environment where every worker is respected, and where gossip is minimized, if not eliminated entirely.

What is credibility? How do you develop it? And just as important, who needs to believe you are credible? In this session you’ll discover how others define credibility. You’ll learn eight strategies for gaining the trust of your boss, your employees, and key members of your organization.

Workteams and the Wizard of Oz

Since 1939, MGM’s film, The Wizard of Oz, has delighted and entertained audiences of all ages and backgrounds. “I have a feeling we are not in Kansas anymore,” Dorothy tells Toto with awe. Not so different from our own experiences in today’s changing organizations, where we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory and are asked to perform the impossible. Learn how this timeless story depicts the most basic framework of teamwork and team member roles.

Recognize the seven keys to effective teamwork and how we too can achieve the impossible with creative thinking, courage and heart and that the most powerful “Wizard” of all, lives within us.
