Substance abuse and problematic patterns of substance abuse among youth can lead to problems at school, cause or aggravate physical and mental health-related issues, promote poor peer relationships, cause motor-vehicle accidents, and place stress on the family. They can also develop into lifelong issues such as substance dependence, chronic health problems, and social and financial consequences. In this workshop you will learn more about the following:
Learn what teens are abusing in different parts of the country
Learn reasons why teens get into drugs
Learn about adolescent brain development
Learn methods of prevention and intervention
The cost of this workshop is $25 and 2 CEUs will be provided. A lunch will be provided as well.
About the presenter:
David Cohen, LCSW, CADC
David Cohen, LCSW, CADC, Director of Clinical Services at Hazelden, has been treating people with chemical dependency and mental illness since 2001. He has been with Hazeldon since 2006 as a counselor.
He earned his Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. He is a certified addiction counselor by the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drugs of Abuse Certification Board (IAODAPCA) and is a board-registered interventionist.
He is an adjunct professor at Loyola University, training Master's level social work students in addiction treatment.
He published a white paper on process addictions and presented his findings to the 2011 IAODAPCA conference and has appeared on ABC local news addressing drug addiction and related issues.
About Hazelden:
Hazelden has been helping individuals, families, and communities struggling with alcohol abuse, substance abuse, and drug addiction since it's founding in a Minnesota lakeside farmhouse in 1949. Hazeldon's mission is to help restore hope, healing, and health to individuals affected by addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Their vision is that all who seek recovery will find it, and the stigma of addiction will be overcome.

The Mental Health Empowerment Project (MHEP) is a program offered by Mental Health America of Illinois and is a series of educational presentations/trainings throughout the Chicagoland area. Presentation topics range from addictions to smoking cessation, bullying to social emotional literacy, and other current mental health topics. The goal of MHEP is to provide mental health providers with the most up-to-date information and tools to successfully treat their clients, as well as to empower consumers to live successful and productive lives.
