Class fee: $25.00 per person

The North Dakota Truck-Weight Education class promotes voluntary truck-weight compliance in an effort to reduce damage to public roads and highways from overweight vehicles.

Important Note: Please bring your truck configurations. During the class you will calculate the legal amount you can haul. We have provided a sample sheet for your truck configurations click on the link below.

Truck configuration needed information

The goal of the class is to provide information and calculation tools that can be used to maximize truck hauling weights for divisible loads (i.e., items of freight such as gravel, corn, boxed goods, etc…), without violating the truck-weight laws on the Interstate, state, and local roadway networks.

Truck configuration criteria such as axle configuration, number of axles, axle spacing, tire width, and number of tires per axle are needed to calculate a truck’s gross vehicle weight.    Attendees will be walked through the process of calculating a truck’s GVW using charts and formulas and then utilize the new North Dakota Truck Weight Online Calculator to greatly simplify the process.

The free online calculator app, ND Truck Weight Calculator, includes an option to print and save the GVW output.

***Please note - this class does not cover permitting or non-divisible loads (i.e., heavy pieces of freight that cannot be taken apart and hauled in multiple loads).

This educational experience is provided by the North Dakota Technical Assistance Program (NDLTAP), a program of the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI), a research and education center at North Dakota State University (NDSU).  Funding from the North Dakota Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration along with technical assistance from the North Dakota Highway Patrol help to make this outreach possible.

Attendee comment: "As an ag producer I came to the training with little to no knowledge of truck-weight compliance, I left the training with a wealth of knowledge on truck-weight compliance. This was an excellent educational opportunity for me".

Registration of more than twelve members from the same entity/company requires prior approve, please contact Denise Brown (701) 328-9856, denise.brown.1@ndsu.edu
