This is a 24-hour, 4-day backcountry skiing and splitboarding certified training that will get you and your backcountry partners practicing decision making in avalanche terrain and performing avalanche rescue that saves lives. The course is taught to American Avalanche Association (A3) standards.

Avalanche Level 1 Rec topics include:

  • Avalanche Basics & Characteristics
  • Terrain
  • Snowpack and Weather
  • Information Gathering
  • Planning, Communication & Decision-making
  • Making Relevant Observations
  • Terrain and Travel
  • Basic Avalanche Companion Rescue

Learn: Backcountry survival skills, trailhead checks, travel protocol, anticipating avalanche consequences, organized companion rescue strategy, search techniques and more. 

Come prepared to be outdoors. Bring your personal equipment that you typically carry with you in the mountains including: beacon, shovel probe. A gear list will be provided. The course meets on Thursday and Friday evening in the classroom and Saturday and Sunday all day out in the field. 

Meet at the Haines Firehall - 217 Haines Hwy, Alaska starting at 5pm on Thursday. Course will run from 6-10 pm Thursday and 6-9 pm Friday in the classroom at the Firehall. Then Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm and Sunday 8 am to 5 pm in the field, most likely at Chilkat Pass, BC, Canada depending on conditions.
