Cherokee Presbytery Leadership Summit 6.17.17

Cherokee Presbytery gathers three times each year for worship, fellowship, learning, encouragement and governance.  This gathering will focus on how we become strong and vital congregations with vibrant witness in Northwest Georgia.  In addition to Ruling Elders and Minister Commissioners who will take part in the decision making for our presbytery, churches are invited to send all leaders who would be interested in participating in either of the two workshops offered after lunch.  Advance registration is strongly requested so that our friends in Dalton can have adequate food for lunch.  Free childcare will be provided by advance registration only.

What Are My Workshop Choices?

Creating Vital Congregations with Ray Jones,  Associate Director of Evangelism PC(USA)             Just like our physicians help us identify markers and measures of our physical health, there are markers of congregational wellness too.  How are we doing in fostering  lifelong Christian formation, healthy systems, intentional evangelism, outward incarnational focus, empowering servant leadership, inspiring worship, and a capacity to care?  Ray will help us take our congregational pulse in each of these areas and identify ways we can build or strengthen patters that lead to healthy and vital communities of faith and witness.

Darkness to Light Child Abuse Prevention Training              In our church nurseries, Sunday School classes, youth groups, preschools, and childcare centers we are stewards of the precious children entrusted to our care.  How can we best equip or staff and volunteers to identify signs of child abuse and set up practices that help us prevent any harm coming to the children in our care?  This workshop is for all individuals who work with children and youth in our churches and will address pracitcal ways we can protect the most vulnerable among us.
What else can I expect?
  • to meet and examine the pastor called by First Presbyterian Church of Marietta
  • to hear about a new mission initiative of Cherokee Presbytery seeking to serve and share faith with recreation enthusiasts
  • to find out how you can be part of a day of service and play with struggling families at Cherokee Retreat Center
  • to have conversations with new friends from sister congregations in Cherokee Presbytery

What is a Simple Gift Offering?

Cherokee Presbytery will host a group of families from Actiion Ministries in Atlanta at the Cherokee Retreat Center on Saturday, June 24th.  We are seeking volunteers to play games, paint fingernails, prepare lunch, and just be good listeners to these women and children who are struggling to make ends meet.  We just want to give them a great day in God's beautiful creation.  Participants in this Leadership Summit are encouraged to bring a simple gift of nail polish or manicure supplies, frisbees, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, or bubbles to share with our guests on that day.  Pick up something simple and bring it to the meeting where the gifts will be collected and then shared the following Saturday.

How do I participate?
