Anxiety or Addiction – Where Do We Draw the Line?

Program Description:
Many individuals with anxiety disorders will present for treatment with an underlying substance abuse problem. Substance use becomes the means to self-medicate many anxiety symptoms. On the other hand, many substance users will feel an underlying anxiety that can be triggered by their substance use. Some individuals report not ever even having problems with anxiety until they had their first substance use.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to identify the effects of substance use on anxiety. Participants will also be able to identify the signs of anxiety to look for in substance using patients. Lastly, participants will learn a basic treatment philosophy for co-occurring substance use and anxiety.  
  

Outline:
Throughout the Presentation we will:

1. Disccus the effects of substance use on anxiety.
2. Identify the signs of anxiety to look for in substance using patients
3. Discuss basic treatment philosophy for co-occurring substance us and anxiety.
