Course Description
A study at an Atlanta hospital determined that the single biggest factor in who received pain medication for a long bone fracture was the race of the patient. Do these Atlanta doctors have a race-based pain management strategy? Of course not! Our brains, however, are biased, often against our will and our stated beliefs. When we are busy, moving fast, or stressed out, these unconscious biases fill in the gaps, influencing everything from mundane to serious health care decisions. The goal of this presentation is to begin to understand how bias works, where it shows up, and begin to point a path towards what we can do about it.
