***CALL FOR SPEAKERS***  

Students, DCT's and all Dentists!  

BAOS Live:  

- Open paper invitation to present on a topic of your choosing (cases, audits, experiences, advice etc...). We only ask that it be in some way relatable to Oral Surgery.  

- Delegates will vote (via an app) for their FOUR preferred topics based only on the presentation titles submitted. These will be shown anonymously on the screen during the morning coffee break and votes will close at lunch. In the afternoon, those selected will present for up to TEN minutes followed by questions.  

- A great opportunity at public speaking and hopefully a bit of fun!

Aims:

This course aims to outline how human factors relate to Oral Surgery in the domains of stress, safety and leadership. It offers insight into creating a safer, more effective, patient centred clinical environment, enabling you to influence and change your current practice.

Objectives:

•      Introduce the concept of non-technical skills

•      Explore examples of cognitive bias

•      Describe LocSIPPs and the team approach to patient safety

•      Discuss how the Montgomery case changed medical practice and its implications for informed consent

•      Describe stress in Oral Surgery from the perspective of the patient and the dentist.

•      Outline considerations and management strategies for coping with stress

•      Examine leadership and teamwork in high pressure environments

•      Assess how to create a winning mindset

 Learning content:

 By the end of the course the delegates will have:

•     An understanding of the term "non-technical skills"

Speakers’ Profiles

Dr Guy Aldous

Dr Guy Aldous trained at UCL, winning a medical cadetship from the Royal Navy, before moving to Birmingham to complete the Foundation Programme. With medical training through a civilian medical school and leadership and management training through the Royal Navy, Guy has comparative insight between two different professional cultures. After developing an early interest in Human Factors and Medical Simulation through an interest in Anaesthetics and Pre-Hospital Medicine, Guy was invited to join the Human Factors SIM Faculty at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 2018. He speaks on clinical reasoning and error to a range of professional groups  

Dr Sarah Barker

Dr Sarah Barker is an experienced Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has worked for over 26 years in the NHS and in private practice. She is a registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health Professions Council.

Sarah currently works within the Dental Psychology Service at Kings College Hospital, specialising in working with patients with orofacial pain.  Sarah has extensive experience of working with individuals, groups and couples in the areas of chronic pain and physical health, depression, anxiety, reactions to stress, CFS, OCD, bereavement and PTSD/complex trauma. She is an advocate of closing the gap between mental and physical health, and integrating patient experience into treatment.  Sarah also runs private clinics and receives referrals from colleagues and the major insurance companies  

 

Mrs Harjit Tagar

Harjit is a Consultant Oral Surgeon at Kings College Hospital and a busy mum of three. She qualified from the University of Dundee in 1997 and went on to complete rotations in Paedodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Surgery. She completed her specialist registrar training at Kings in Oral Surgery along with a Masters in Clinical Dentistry from the University of London. Harjit went on to work extensively in both primary care and in secondary care as a Staff Grade, whilst completing a Diploma in Conscious Sedation at Guys Hospital. She went on to be appointed Associate Specialist and launched the Dental Trauma Service at Kings.

Harjit s specialist interests include high risk third molar surgery, dental trauma, staff governance and patient safety. She now focuses on her Secondary care commitment and was appointed Consultant in Oral Surgery at Kings in January 2016. Since then she has established a successful Local Safety Standard for Invasive Procedures into their busy Oral Surgery department with the input of the whole clinical team, which had been modelled throughout the Dental Hospital. She has lectured on the topic of Patient Safety, both to local GDPs and nationally with BOAS and HEE.

James Badenoch QC

James Badenoch QC was pupil to John (later Mr Justice) Alliott, and Harry (Lord) Woolf at 1 Crown Office Row where he has practiced ever since. He has specialised for over 25 years in clinical negligence, medical law, and professional discipline. He took silk in 1989. He has appeared in a succession of major cases in the House of Lords, The Privy Council, The Court of Appeal, The High Court, The GMC and The GDC. He acts for Claimants and Defendants.

Listed for many years in the principal directories as one of the foremost practitioners in the fields of clinical negligence, professional discipline, and personal injury.

Mr Badenoch QC was counsel for the successful plaintiff in Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board.

Alan Chambers MBE

Polar adventurer Alan Chambers MBE led the first successful British unsupported expedition from Canada to the Geographic North Pole. They walked 672 nautical miles in temperatures as low as -65°C, dragging a sledge the weight of a baby elephant. After a grueling seventy days on the ice, on 16th May 2000, Alan and his teammate raised the Union Jack.  Alan has subsequently led over a dozen North Pole expeditions with top business leaders and chief executives. He helps them to explore and reflect on their own leadership capabilities.

In 2006 Alan lead a team to complete the grueling Yukon Arctic Ultra Challenge.  In 2008 he led and crossed Greenland as part of the Feet of Green initiative. The initiative was designed to inspire children with a spirit of adventure and care for the environment.  In 2009 he led a team of senior executives and high achievers to the South Pole.

A former Royal Marine with 16 years’ service, in 1995 Alan was a member of the first winter expedition to traverse Iceland by ski. He has sledged across Greenland, Canada North West Territories, Norway and Iceland.
