Aims: This study day aims to provide an update on the latest concepts in the multi-disciplinary management of our oral surgery patients.
Objectives:
This course is intended to outline common interfaces where joint planning and discussion will benefit the patient.
Management options will be outlined to create an optimum patient care pathway.
Learning content:
By the end of the session the delegate will have:
Understanding of the common areas where our management overlaps with other specialties
Knowledge of treatment options for patients requiring multidisciplinary input in to treatment planning
Knowledge of areas of overlap with ENT, Orthodontics, Restorative, Special Care Dentistry and Implantology

Speakers’ Profiles
Mr Michael Saunders, Consultant Otolaryngologist, University Hospital Bristol: Although I have a major interest in complex paediatric airway / head and neck surgery I have continued my more general ENT practice in rhinology and sinus surgery since I became a consultant. My MD thesis related to molecular biology and steroid treatment of nasal polyposis.
Mr Christian Day, Consultant Orthodontist, Bristol Dental Hospital: Initially a dental technician, I joined UOB in 1991, graduating in 1997. I completed my Orthodontic Specialist training at The Royal London Hospital in 2003, prior to moving back to Bristol as an FTTA. I have been a consultant since 2005.The majority of my patients have multidisciplinary needs, with oral surgery, paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry or OMFS. I established the Orthodontic / Oral Surgery MDT clinic with Chris Bell in around 2014.
Mr James Ban, Consultant Restorative Dentist, Prince Charles Hospital: James completed 5 year specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Bristol Dental Hospital, winning a number of national awards, including ones from the British Society of Restorative Dentistry and British Society of Prosthodontics. Following which he worked as a Locum Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in Bristol providing specialist advice and treatment for patients who were referred by their general dental practitioners with complex restorative dental needs. He was appointed Lead Consultant in Restorative Dentistry for Cwm Taf University Health Board earlier this year and provides oral rehabilitation for patients following treatment for head and neck cancer and patients diagnosed with dental developmental anomalies. James also sees patients on a private referral basis in Cardiff.
Ms Grace Kelly, Consultant, Special Care Dentistry, Cardiff Dental Hospital: Grace worked in Ireland for 6 years post-qualification in 2003, including jobs as a Senior Dental Surgeon and Senior House Officer in Special Care Dentistry in Dublin Dental Hospital. She was the first to complete specialist training in Special Care Dentistry in Wales in 2013; and subsequently worked as Senior Dental Surgeon Special Needs in Louth, providing comprehensive dental care for special care patients and initiating a sedation service, before taking up her current consultant/honorary senior lecturer position in Cardiff University Dental Hospital in 2016 in Acute & Special Care Dentistry.
Mr Rob Adams, Specialist in Oral Surgery & Clinical Lecturer in Dental Implantology, Cardiff Dental Hospital: Rob graduated from Cardiff Dental Hospital in 1992. He then worked in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery positions gaining entry onto the Specialist List in Oral Surgery in 1999. In 2001 Rob completed, with distinction, the MSc in Implant Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital. Since 2003, Rob has worked as a Part-time clinical lecturer in Dental Implantology at Cardiff University helping to develop and run the MSc / PGDip in Dental Implantology, soft tissue and bone augmentation courses. Rob has given invited lectures on the surgical aspects of implantology, including hard and soft tissue augmentation at ADI / ITI Study Clubs and National conferences including BAOS, BSP, ABAOMS and EFOSS. Rob limits his work to dental implant treatment, bone grafting, sinus grafting, soft tissue grafting and oral surgery procedures.
