Coaching Conversations 11/1 & 11/2

We all know how to talk. But conversations that utilize coaching skills leave people feeling stronger, focused, and more creative – more capable of tackling the tasks in front of them and doing it in a way that leaves them feeling fulfilled rather than drained.

Virtually every church today is in a turn-around mode.  That requires pastoral and lay leaders who know how to engage the laity at a deeper level than ever before.  Coaching conversations create the space where persons get in touch with their unique giftedness, find encouragement to test those gifts, and then have a place of reflection and accountability.

This two-day workshop, led by Mary Huycke and Dan Smith or R. Lee Hayward, introduces and builds skills in 5 basic coaching competencies. Participants learn and practice the basic flow of a coaching conversation.

Participants learn:

  • How to have a coaching conversation
  • When a coaching style is most appropriate
  • The conceptual underpinnings of coaching

Mary Huycke and Dan Smith are United Methodist clergy, certified coaches, and authors with the Alban Institute.  Their most recent title is Pathway to Renewal: Practical Steps for Congregations.

R. Lee Hayward is an Elder in the California-Nevada Annual Conferene. Lee is currently appointed to an extension ministry of change management and executive coaching both in secular and church settings.

Cost: $180 for PNW Conference, UMC; $225 for out of area United Methodists and ecumenical participants.

Limited to 35 participants

Registration for the Coaching Conversations Practicum is available for Spokane and Vancouver attendees of the 2013 Coaching Conversations Trainings.

Continue learning by applying coaching skills in your unique ministry setting and reflecting on your practice with an experienced coach. The practicum includes:

  1.  Individual call to set individual learning goals (45 min)
  2. Group call to practice skills, share learnings and gain feedback (90 min)
  3. Individual call to assess learning goals and continue skill development (45 min)
  4. Group call to practice skills, present and debrief case studies for group learning (90 min)
