Animal Care

Why do we walk?

Every year we dedicate our Walk to a special animal who represents the many animals that come to our shelter or that we rescue from cruelty situations. This year, meet Diva. Case #282284

In the summer of 2012, Diva made her first appearance at Animal Care & Control. She was dropped off in our outside depository after being found running loose. Her owners had moved away and given her to another couple a month before. Her tags traced back to the original owners making it hard to find out where she belonged. After transferring ownership to her new family she was reunited. Then in the winter of 2015 Diva was once again found running loose. Her owners had given her up yet again without transferring ownership. This time, her family didn't return for her. Diva was a sweet social girl and was ready to go into adoptions but she was having "accidents" inside. Concerned that it could be something more than a behavior problem, we sent her to Brown Mackie for testing where it was discovered that she had a bladder stone nearly 2" in diameter! With help from our "Angel Fund" we were able to have it removed.

After returning to FWACC, staff realized that Diva was acting abnormal after surgery. Further testing revealed that urine was leaking into her abdomen and an emergency surgery at NIVES (North East Indiana Veterinary Emergency Specialty Hospital) saved her life.

It's hard for us to understand how some dogs, like Diva, continue to get passed around from place to place. She will need to be on a special diet for the rest of her life and have regular testing for bladder stones...Diva has finally found her forever home with one of the loving, caring staff members at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control.
