Workshop 1: Background Science and

Tools for Restoring Semi-Arid Streams

This workshop is the first in a series of three that will be held in the San Antonio region in 2013 and 2014.  Workshop 1 provides the foundation needed for applying natural channel design concepts in a semi-arid environment.  The next two workshops will build on these concepts by focusing on function-based assessments, determining restoration potential, and developing natural channel designs.  The overall purpose of the workshop series is to provide stream restoration practitioners with stream assessment and design skills needed to meet the requirements of the SARA stream restoration Standard Operating Procedures.

Workshop 1 topics include:

  • History of Channel Modification in the San Antonio Region
  • SARA Stream Restoration Operating Procedure
  • Stream Functions Pyramid Framework
  • Hydrology, Hydraulic, and Geomorphology Functions

  • Measuring Channel Form

This workshop includes classroom lectures and exercises, field exercises, and group discussion.
