Whistler Half Marathon Training Program

Keep fit all winter long by joining a half-marathon training program.

Starting Sunday January 30th, 2011 this 18 week training program will gear you up for the Whistler Half Marathon on Saturday June 4th, 2011.  Join the training group at the event and celebrate your months of preparation. Find out more about the event here: http://www.whistlerhalfmarathon.com/

We set up the training, all you have to do is SHOW UP!

Sundays  we meet at 8:30 am (location as yet to be determined). These will always be "long slow distance" runs, ranging from 7 km to 20 km building over the 18 weeks. Each Sunday we will offer a "topic of the week" related to running/training for interested runners, from 8:20 am to 8:30 and then we will be off on our run.

Thursdays we meet at 6 pm for some higher intensity training such as intervals, hill training. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND A HEART RATE MONITOR FOR THESE SESSIONS, or even better a GPS! There's a good deal on the Garmin ForeRunner 305 on Amazon.ca if you click HERE.  For January/February and some of March, a headlamp will also be necessary equipment. At the end of some of these sessions, we may include learning about fascia rolling and stretching.

Option #1-   Two guided runs a week for 18 weeks, totalling 36 runs for $90 + HST = $101.80.

Option #2- "Sundays ONLY" for 18 weeks for $55 + HST ($61.60) if you would rather not do the speed and hill workouts.

Option #3- Drop-In on workouts. Waiver must be signed at the beginning of the program. There will be an initial running group membership fee of $30 to cover the cost of the training program for 18 weeks and the weekly emails. The addtional drop-in fee is $5/workout, including HST.

*No matter what option you choose, you will also get the following included in the program:

  • an 18  week training program
  • an online "message board" to find training partners, share great trails, ask questions
  • 20% discount on running gear throughout the program at Source for Sports
  • a sampling of ProBars- 2 Original flavors and 2 Sweet & Salty flavors
  • a 24 oz stainless steel BPA free water bottle (with a sports cap)
  • a 90 minute Foam Rolling for Runners Workshop taught by a physiotherapist (date TBA)

 

All options use the SAME link to register, at the bottom of this page. You will receive an email regarding payment in January and you can choose your preferred option then.

NOTE: This is WINTER running. It would be a good idea to have the following gear: some type of traction devices or assistance for your shoes should it be snowy and a headlamp & high-visibility clothing/outerwear for Thursday runs.

We recommend that registrants be able to walk/run at least 6 km prior to the start date (January 30th, 2011).  If you need help getting up to this point in your fitness we can send you a  pre-training program for January. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about getting ready for the program.

***A customized "12 week Strength and Conditioning Program for Runners"  is being designed and will be offered to those keen on supplementing their training further on Tuesdays at 6 am & Friday mornings at 6:30 am  every week. Pre-registration is required. Program will to taught by Chandra Kipfer, location will be Violet Quartz Wellness Studio, next door to the physio clinic and some sessions will be outdoors (more details as weather warms up).
