Training Israeli and Palestinian Therapists: The Limits of Empathy

Presenter: Itamar Lurie, PhD

Dr. Lurie will explore the complex dynamics of empathy by drawing from experiences in creating and leading The Israeli-Palestinian Binational School for Psychotherapy at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. He will share a real life example of a situation that challenged intra-group  understanding and allowed for greater introspection and empathy among, and between, the participants.

Dr. Lurie will discuss the following:

  • What is the connection between empathy and humiliation?
  • How do power dynamics impact empathy?
  • How do we synthesize Heinz Kohut’s notion of empathy with John Steiner’s discussion of vulnerability of the one who is being seen?

An optional dinner will be held before the program at Al Dar Bistro in Bala Cynwyd (281 Montgomery Avenue), starting at 5:30 pm. Please note that while it is free to register for the dinner, PCOP will not be covering meal costs. If interested in attending, please register by Monday, November 6th.
