This panel consists of three family members - a psychoanalyst (father), a social worker (mother), and a historian (son). John Frank and Elaine Frank will discuss their own personal and professional history connected to the coming out of their son, Nathaniel Frank, during a time that the American Psychoanalytic Association was revising its theories, practice, and policies toward LGBTQ members and patients (2000-2005). Intergenerational "coming out" involves parents’ parallel disclosing in public about having an LGBTQ child. This process can be challenging for clinician parents trained in older psychodynamic theory and practice that viewed LGBTQ identity as an aberration - for which parents had some responsibility - as their field was becoming more responsive to the sweeping social and historical forces of the LGBTQ movement.
