Selma Kramer & Margaret Mahler Lecture: "Auto Mechanics: The Self in Dialogue and Contemplation"

Presenter: James Herzog, MD (Boston, MA)
Discussant: Corinne Masur, PsyD

This lecture will present child analytic cases that illustrate the uniqueness of each treatment, and the ways in which the child analyst’s job is the same as an adult analyst’s job: to learn the intrapsychic language of the analysand and to be accepted by him or her as a trustworthy accompanying person. This is often a long and complicated process in which the analyst expects to know and the analysand expects to learn. What distinguishes work with children is perhaps a greater willingness on the part of the child to expect that adults will be clueless, to tolerate grievous errors and to know that the analyst will likely be a slow learner. Adult analysands are often less tolerant.

James Herzog, MD is an adult and child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He is a training and supervising analyst at BPSI and a Child Supervisory Analyst as well. He also supervises at the Massachusetts Institute of Psychoanalysis and in Zurich, Switzerland at the Sigmund Freud Institute. Dr. Herzog is interested in play, co-constructed treatment conceptualizations, trauma, both historical and directly inflicted, and the role of the father. He is the author of Father Hunger (Routledge, 2001).

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Analyze and discuss one’s own clinical work with children as it relates to intrapsychic language and acceptance by the patient.

2. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of this reversal in the usually assumed asymmetry of the analytic situation – that the analyst knows and the analysand learns.

3. Explain more than one meaning of the concept of play in analytic work with both children and adults.
