FORUM: Black Psychoanalysts Speak

Participants will view Black Psychoanalysts Speak, a film by Basia Winograd that won the 2013 PEP Web Video Project Grant. Through small-group discussions, we will identify methods of listening to and engaging patients, and explore the diverse and complex role of race in the approaches of patient and therapist to the psychotherapeutic relationship.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1.  Describe from examples given in the film approaches for listening to and communicating with patients and colleagues of different racial backgrounds.

2. Engage patients in their psychotherapeutic care by demonstrating a deeper understanding of racial issues and the traumatic dimensions of discrimination.

3. Identify strategies and tools to work effectively with colleagues and patients of different racial backgrounds.
