Finding the Connection: Therapeutic Work with Suicidal Clients

Join Jeff at one of three workshop dates offered in 2017:
Feb. 10, Oct. 20, Dec. 8

Therapists of any theoretical background will be provided a framework for psychotherapy with suicidal clients. Topics:

  • Establishing the frame of treatment.
  • Understanding common aspects of the suicidal process.
  • Using psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral strategies to address suicide risk.
  • Common problems in treatment with suicidal clients: Countertransference, crisis management, hospitalization and breaking confidentiality.
  • Documentation.

Workshop Instructor

Jeffrey Sung, M.D. is an acting instructor with the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Since 2002, his clinical responsibilities have included direct service and consultation in the care of individuals facing homelessness, medical illness, substance use and psychiatric conditions. He has taught psychodynamic theory, suicide risk assessment and managing response to patient suicide to psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, primary care providers and social workers. In addition to work with the university, Dr. Sung also maintains a private practice.

In 2015, Dr. Sung and Keith Myers shared the Sue Eastgard Training Excellence Award for their work on Wellspring’s "Working with Suicidal Clients" workshop.
