When Mount Vesuvius extinguished the town of Pompeii in 79 CE (AD), her people and the city disappeared for centuries, only to be "rediscovered" in 1592. Pompeii is one of the oldest ongoing excavations in the world. The most recent excavations and science continue to reveal the lives of those who lived and died in Pompeii. The tragedy of Pompeii's destruction gives us a picture of the fates of those who lived there. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted, it did not care if the victims were rich or poor, free or slave. However, Vesuvius did not erase how people lived their lives. Pompeii was once a bustling, noisy multi-ethnic commercial town that welcomed travelers from all over the Mediterranean world and beyond.
To prepare you for the exhibit at the Museums of Science and Industry, I will focus on the following areas:
ABOUT OUR PRESENTER:
Chris Renaud, Professor Emerita in Classics, Religion, and Women’s and Gender Studies at Carthage College, earned her Ph.D. in Classics and Classical Archaeology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. While in graduate school, she received a Fulbright Research Fellowship to study in Italy. Before Dr. Renaud arrived in Kenosha, Professor Renaud taught at Duquesne University and Bucknell University. She excavated in Athens (Greece), Rome, Ostia, and Metaponto (Italy) as an archaeologist. Her current project has her excavating in the Roman Forum.

This class has the option for in-person or virtual attendance, however, only 40 spots for in-person are available. Once the 40 in-person slots are filled all additional registrations will be for virtual. Everyone will receive a virtual link regardless of their choice. Only those with confirmed in-person registration will be allowed in the classroom due to space limitations. Please also remember you need to have your parking permit displayed on your vehicle.
