1/26/23 and 2/2/23 Ancient Egyptian Star Clocks hybrid class

Thursdays, January 26, and February 2, 2023 (Hybrid):

Online thru Zoom and In-person at Tallent Hall, Room 182

1/26/23 LET’S GET SERIOUS ABOUT SIRIUS!

This presentation will examine the origins and uses of ancient Egyptian star clocks, one of the most enigmatic subjects within the realm of Egyptology, studied by only a few scholars over the past century. While many have criticized these as imperfect “mechanisms,” members will be introduced to the detailed sophistication of their workings, where they were located and how they were (supposedly) a phenomenon known to few outside of select communities and groups. Timekeeping has always been a perplexing subject among Egyptologists but, our speaker will provide us with some amazing insights to how these easily overlooked timekeeping systems functioned within the context of this ancient society.

2/2/23 KV-63 – DISCOVERY, ARTIFACTS & ARCHAEOLOGY TODAY

This RARE discussion will provide a firsthand view of the discovery of KV-63 in 2006 and the objects cleared from its chambers. This is a wide glimpse into the actual work associated with archaeological digs in Egypt, particularly those in the Valley of the Kings. Unpublished items will be shown publicly for the first time in over 3200 years where they sat unknown and undisturbed, waiting for the right person to find them. A chronology of the dig objects will highlight the latest intact and repaired artifacts from the dig of the Amenmesse Mission. As the world celebrates the 100th anniversary after the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s treasures, this presentation will provide a look into what still remains buried under the sands of ancient Egypt….only 70-feet away from the tomb of King Tut!

Our Guest Speaker: PETER CHIAPPORI

Peter is a licensed architect in Illinois & Wisconsin.

Currently he is the archivist for TWO tombs, KV-10 & KV-63, in the Valley of the Kings. KV-63 found in 2006, the most recent discovery since King Tutankhamun (KV-62) in 1922, by the late Dr. Otto Schaden, the mission director of the Amenmesse Project & one of the most prolific modern excavators in the Valley.

Peter is also a team member on the latest KV-10 excavations. Invited out by Dr. Schaden in 2009, his area of expertise is deciphering hieratic texts, though he has been field architect, artist & engineer for the mission in its final clearings of KV-10.

Peter’s hieratic decipherments has aided the new dig director, Dr. Salima Ikram. While still working to complete Dr. Schaden’s unfinished / unpublished works, he has also been an independent scholar of Egyptology for decades, well-versed in the ancient language, culture & history.

Peter has taught many classes at the Kenosha Public museum over the last thirteen years including Beginning Hieroglyphs, Egyptian Symbolism, Religious History, Pyramids, Tombs, Temples, Mummification, Pharaonic Chronology, Canid & Feline deities and previously for our A.L.L. members.
