11/23/21 Whether the Weather online class

1:00 pm, Online Zoom Class

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Kenosha native Jake Hoey created his Facebook page “Jake’s Kenosha Area Weather” to supplement local weather information. With 8000 followers on his page + over 1000 on Instagram, his goal is to explain the day-to-day weather, overall patterns, extreme events and local climatology in order to make meteorology more accessible.

The presentation will include:

•            schooling for a career in meteorology

•            common misconceptions about the weather

•            breakdown of instrument used to observe weather

•            production of a local weather page

•            thoughts on the future of weather forecasting.

•            storm chasing information and experiences

Bio: Jake Hoey’s interest in weather began in high school when he realized it was the only thing with the power to “secure” a day off from school. He enrolled in the meteorology program at OU in Norman, Oklahoma whose curriculum includes studies in calculus, atmospheric dynamics, synoptic meteorology, differential equations and mesoscale meteorology.

During his years in Oklahoma Jake participated in amateur storm chasing in the Southern Plains, observing around 15 tornadoes & having a few close escapes.

After graduation in 2013 Jake returned to Kenosha, working in a non-weather-related day job. He launched his Facebook meteorology page about 8 years ago and continues to gain followers.
