5/6/21 Quilting and Fiber Art class online

1 – 3:00 pm, Online Class

Nancy Justus, a Racine native, will take us on a tour of basic quilts, historic quilts, and fiber arts. She began sewing with her mother at age 10 , over 60 years ago. At age 35 Nancy began quilting. While taking art classes at UW-Parkside with Doug DeVinny and David Holmes, she began a career in fiber arts. David Holmes was an inspiration in her art world. (See more information/bio on page 2)

The class will show examples of quilts dating back to the 1920s and up to 2007. One of these will be the quilt made by her great grandmother for her parents’ wedding. The class will also show examples of fiber art and its basics.

Nancy will speak about the history of quilting and the names of some of the many quilt patterns. Finally, Nancy will talk about the basics of quilt construction and demonstrate two simple ideas for fiber art projects, one a pillow and one a wall hanging. There will be time allowed for questions at the end.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER: Nancy Justus

Friends of Nancy who knew she sewed asked her to join them for quilting. That was the beginning of Lighthouse Quilters of Racine, of which she was a charter member. Several years later Barb Vallone and Nancy started Rainbow Quilters of Racine due to the popularity of quilting. Racine Art Museum has in its permanent collection four of Nancy’s fiber art creations.Besides spending time with quilting and fiber arts, Nancy substitute taught for 25 years at RUSD, then subbed at Lutheran High and The Prairie School. She has several anecdotes about her substitute teaching experiences and quilting experiences crossing paths.
