2/25/21 How the Arts Need to Change to Survive class online

1:30 – 3:30 pm, Online Class

What does Kenosha Opera Festival have that other companies don’t? Nothing. It’s how we use our tools, our time, and our people. This is the digital age, and the opera industry, as well as the performing arts industry as a whole, has been due to change for a long time. We are a part of the entertainment industry- when opera is in competition with Hollywood, Netflix, Instagram influencers, and a million other types of media, we must recognize that it is time to change our tactics and rise to the challenges of the modern world. Nicholas Huff and Kaila Bingen will share their personal experiences as specialists in the arts industry, strategies for arts company development both through and on the other side of a pandemic, and their long-term goals and recommendations for how the arts can modernize and still hold onto their core product in a technology-centered world.

Nicholas Huff (President) and Kaila Bingen (Vice-President) co-founded the Kenosha Opera Festival together in late 2019. The two met during their undergraduate studies at Carthage College, where Nicholas earned a BA in Vocal Performance and Kaila earned a BA in Music Education.Nicholas continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music, where he completed his MM in Vocal Performance and Literature. He is a performing operatic tenor singing leading roles across America at such opera venues as the Florida Grand Opera, Merola Opera, Rochester Lyric Opera and others.Kaila taught public school orchestra, choir, and theatre in West Bend, Wisconsin, before coming back to Carthage to earn her MM in Music Theatre Vocal Pedagogy. She teaches beginning orchestra in Kenosha and is the Preparatory Choir Director for Milwaukee Children’s Choir.
