11.1.17 Alternative Energy Outing 

Have you ever wondered . . .. . . How safe is nuclear power against natural disasters? How does it generate electricity and how long does it take? Is it a clean energy source? Is nuclear fission sustainable? How is wind energy stored for later use? Who uses wind power and how can it get to me? How do wind turbines work? What is a wind farm? What are the pros and cons of wind power? Is wind energy a clean energy source?

Get answers to these questions and morewith a bus trip to Point Beach Nuclear Plant in Two Rivers, WI and to Blue Sky Green Field Wind Energy Center in Malone, WI.

Cost: Members $35, Guests: $40, Limited to 55 persons

Schedule: 

  • 7 am: Bus leaves Tallent Hall. Arrive by 6:45 am and display parking permit in car.
  • 8:30 am: Bus stops for restroom break.
  • 10-11:30 am: Arrive at Point Beach Nuclear Plant, 6400 Nuclear Rd., Two Rivers, WI 54241. In the auditorium; we will watch a power point presentation about nuclear energy with time for questions and then move on to the hands-on display area. This is NOT a plant tour.
  • Noon – 1:30 pm: Enjoy a buffet lunch at Altona Supper Club, 2306 Calumet Dr., New Holstein, WI 53061. You have a choice of: baked haddock, breaded shrimp, broasted chicken, BBQ ribs, baby reds, mashed potatoes & gravy, chicken dumpling soup/salad bar and cheese cake desserts. To drink: soda, coffee, iced/hot tea.
  • 2 – 4 pm: Arrive at Blue Sky Green Field, N 9470 County Rd. W., Malone, WI 53049. We will split our group in two. Group one will watch a power point presentation on wind energy to learn about wind turbines with time for questions. A local farmer with a wind turbine on his land will be on hand for questions also. Group two will take the bus to the base of a wind turbine to peek inside as part of the tour (there are 7 steps and handrails). You will get a feel for the tower’s height at 262 feet with each blade being 135 feet long! Later the groups trade places.
  • 5 pm: Bus stops for restroom break.
  • 6:30 pm: Bus arrives at Tallent Hall.

Checks should be payable to UW Parkside/ALL; deliver or mail to Vanessa.

Credit card registration fees must be submitted online!

Watch for an email with the registration LINK on or about the 1st Monday of each month.  Note: as classes fill, members signing up get preference.

Refund policy: refunds will be issued only if the cancellation is received prior to the event deadline stated for each event. 

If you pay by credit card, your credit card will be refunded.

If you pay by check you will be issued a university refund check.
