Hitchcock's Film Classics classes

7/11/17 & 7/18/17 (both days 1-3pm in Molinaro D132)

Everyone loves to be both frightened and fascinated by Alfred Hitchcock's film classics, so we’re sure to enjoy seeing film clips from two of his most famous thrillers, along with an in-depth presentation of Hitchcock's methodology and perspectives in developing these two films.

Rear Window    This journey takes us into the world of voyeurism and is considered to be among Alfred Hitchcock’s most intriguing films. Released in 1954, it stars James Stewart, a professional photographer, who breaks his leg on assignment and is then confined to a wheelchair at home. With co-star Grace Kelly, he begins to watch his neighbors with high-powered binoculars and a camera’s telephoto lens across the apartment complex courtyard, and later suspects that one of them has murdered his wife.  Hitchcock masterfully pulls us into the acute observation of other people and their private lives.

North by Northwest   At first seen as a light romantic-thriller comedy, Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) is now considered a probing exploration of personal identity in the modern world. Cary Grant plays Roger Thornton, a successful New York advertising executive, who soon discovers that others believe he is a secret government agent and that his life is now fatally threatened. Together with co-star Eva Marie Saint, Thornton travels to Chicago, is attacked by a murderous biplane in Indiana cornfield, and then climbs Mount Rushmore in South Dakota to save his life and re-establish his true identity. Discover how Hitchcock weaves deeper layers of thought and theme in this highly popular film.
