Group Leader Sign-Up

Girls Science and Engineering Day is Saturday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be held in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology. The program draws about 500 girls in the third through fifth grades who are smart, curious, energetic, and full of questions. As a group leader, you will be teamed with another adult to escort a group of 20 girls though a four-workshop schedule of fun, interactive classes. In total, 24 different topics are presented ranging from extracting DNA from strawberries, to shooting rockets, learning about raptors, and playing computer games. All sessions are taught by women volunteers.

As a group leader you will not have to teach class, instead, your job is to keep your team together, on schedule, to answer questions, and to provide assistance. We furnish lunch, a great t-shirt and goodies. We will conclude by 2 p.m. As a group leader, you must be able to stay for the entire program.

Alabama State Law requires that any event on the University campus with minor children must have a list of all adults participating on file. Please review the UAH Child Protection Policy. Group Leaders are considered to have care and custody of the girls during the event.  You will be required to have a background check and complete a video training.

You must attend a training session prior to the event. Training dates and times will be set for October 30, 31 and November 1 and 2. Volunteers who have not registered prior to October 17 will not be allowed in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology for Girls' Science and Engineering Day.

UAH students and alumni are invited to volunteer to be group leaders.
