Institute Studies Cohort 2018

The Institute Studies Cohort is a six-part professional learning series that offers participants a way to experience personalized learning firsthand, while building the essential knowledge, skills and tools needed to launch personalized learning in their classrooms or buildings.  Cohorts will work as a community of practice, with opportunities for intentional collaboration within and among teams.

The cohort will attend six sessions over an eleven month period.

This process is open to any interested member district but may be most appropriate for districts or teams that:

  • Have a small team in a school but do not have infrastructure support throughout the district to implement personalized learning
  • Want continuing support over an eleven month period in an established process

Session 1: January 24, 8:00am -- 12:00pm, CESA #1

At this session participants will learn about the Institute’s model to personalize learning and the work currently being done in the network. Participants will discuss why they are in the cohort, what they plan to accomplish, and will begin their journey of studying and understanding personalized learning.

Session 2: February 13, 8:30am -- 3:30pm, Locations TBA

Participants will visit several sites in the CESA #1 region that provide robust examples of personalized learning. This is an opportunity to see and learn from what others have done in the network.

Session 3: March 13,  12:00pm--3:45pm, CESA #1

This session will guide participants to reflect deeply on their visit experience - not only what they saw, but what they can apply to their own situation. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with other groups along with their own group and determine next steps. Depending on the district, this plan of action may look different. However, this process will be most beneficial for teams that plan to begin implementing at least aspects of personalized learning the following semester.

Session 4: August 7, 8:30am -- 3:30pm, CESA #1

This session will provide a check-point for teams as they roll-out their plan. How is their plan evolving? What additional support do they need to be successful? It will also provide a chance for participants to hear tips and tricks of what other educators wished they’d known before implementing so that the community of practice can learn from each other.

Session 5: October 15, 8:00am -- 12:00pm, CESA #1

Participants will be broken down into elementary, middle, and high school groups at this session. This will provide teams with a chance to discuss early implementation and learn what others are doing and discuss pitfalls and opportunities.  Optional team time is available until 3:30pm for those who are interested.

Session 6: November 7, 12:00pm--3:45pm, East Troy

At this final session, the cohort will work through activities to hone their work, but particularly to begin thinking about adjustments, changes they plan to make, and how to scale their work. No team will be able to flip the switch in one semester to be fully personalized – this session will provide participants with the tools and skills they will need for this continual improvement toward full personalization going forward.

Please plan to bring a fully charged device and earbuds or headphones to each session.

Successful implementation of personalized learning has always involved a team working together in conjunction with a supportive administrator. As such, participants are encouraged to be part of a team; we strongly encourage one member of the team to be an administrator.
