Impact of Trauma Informed Care and Adverse Childhood Experiences on Early Brain & Literacy Developement

Description
In the morning with Dr. Navsaria is an opportunity to:

  • Assist educators, families, caregivers and other social service providers in fostering a greater understanding of trauma informed care and child traumatic stress 
  • Help providers understand the effects that trauma can have on child development, behaviors, and functioning, as well as recognize, prevent and cope with compassion fatigue.  
Dr. Navsaria will also discuss the importance of early literacy, along with key concepts about literacy development will be reviewed and the concept behind the Reach Out and Read Program. 

 

In the afternoon, Sara Daniel of SaintA, will discuss trauma sensitive schools and application in the school setting as well as integrating the knowledge about trauma and ACE into policies, procedures, and practices in schools.

About the Presenters
Dr. Dipesh Navsaria, MPH, MSLIS,  MD is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University School of Medicine & Public Health.  He practices primary care pediatrics at Access Community Health Center.  He is the founder and director of the Pediatric Early Literacy Projects at the University of Wisconsin and is also the founding Medical Director of Reach Out and Read Wisconsin. 

Sara DanielMSW, LCSW, is the Director of Clinical Services and Staff Development for SaintA. Sara has been collaborating with school districts to provide consultation and training in working with students affected by trauma, mental health issues or behavioral challenges. Sara is a member of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Trauma Sensitive Schools workgroup is the co-author of the Trauma Sensitive Schools Toolkit available on the DPI website.
